Training

Teaching how to shoot, what to shoot and how to use editing to overcome certain disadvantages of your camera

People keep asking me how I achieve those photos I publish here and on my Facebook pages.
It’s not so easy to explain, so I thought, I might as well offer some training with your camera in the field as well as in editing the results.

1. Camera training:
One on one or small groups.
Getting out of the automatic mode and into manual mode of your camera.
Auto mode can get you some nice results, but it’s limited by the settings of your camera’s operating system (every digital camera runs on an operating system which does some basic editing in camera).

2. Editing
Preferably one on one training.

How it works

Before we decide on any actual training session, I would like to catch up in person, to determine what you expect, what specifically you want to learn, what gear and software you have and your level of experience. This catch up is free of charge if it’s not too far away from Wellington.
This is just to find out where you are and where you want to go with your photography, as well as to find appropriate pricing for your sessions.

What you need

For camera training:
Ideally your own camera, DSLR entry level or higher, a user manual for your camera (ideally the larger, digital version as this will be more complete than the printed manual).
Appropriate clothing to go out and shoot, according to the conditions.
For night shots or panorama you would need a sturdy tripod.

For editing:
Your own computer, as you will want to work on your photos on your own at some point.
Some image editing software, ideally Photoshop.

I can show you how to work with my cameras and computer, if you don’t have any gear yet and just want to find out if this is something you want to do.

What I will show you

I will show you the basics of shooting and editing.
This will include some knowledge about your camera, lenses, the settings you use and how those interact with each other. I will also show you how to find interesting subjects and how to use angles to make rather common subjects look more interesting.
I will also show you how to use Photoshop.

I won’t, however, teach you my style of photography. I will rather encourage you to develop your own style. You don’t want to take photos as everyone else!
However, I will teach you the basics of your camera, what different settings do to an image, how to recover shadows etc.

Fees

As this sort of training is rather complex and depending on individual needs, I will have to charge accordingly. It will be around $55 per session, which will last about 1.5-2 hours.
