Oriental Bay

So, Wellington seems to be drowning. Strong winds, torrential rain, thunder storms... That's even too bad for me!
So here something from better days (nights)... Carter Fountain, Oriental Bay, Wellington.

Short vs Long

5/12/2019

Photography means, in essence, to capture a moment in time, using light.
The interesting thing is, though, how long is this moment actually?
A very short moment (=fast or short exposure) can catch water in mid-air, frozen in time. This needs a lot of surrounding light, though, but only a short time-frame. It can usually be done by holding the camera in your hand.
A very long moment (=long exposure) can make the same scene look like something out of a fairy-tale. The same water looks soft, somewhat "milky". This needs less light but a longer time-frame. Ideally there's where you start using a tripod.
The shorter exposure is more common because one needs no extra gear like a tripod.
Because it's more common, it's also thought to be more realistic - Actually, no. Both versions can't be seen with your eyes, only with a camera.
Here two examples:
The first a short, the second a long exposure. Both straight out of the camera, no filters etc.
... But, I can't help myself, so here my personal, cleaned up and adjusted version. In that case, of the long exposure one.

Commission Work

The image below is the result of a commission order I received from Daikin New Zealand.
This panorama is designed to be printed as a wall cover, 3 meters high and 9 meters wide (!!!), to be mounted in their new offices in Auckland. It's my largest piece so far.
I used 35 single images to create this panorama and I'm pretty proud of the result!
As this post implies, yes, I do commissions, so please contact me if you're interested.

Here you go, a real Cave Weta in a real Weta Cave ;-)
I used my phone for lighting, I didn't bring any sophisticated gear - I didn't know I'd find them...

Percy's Reserve, Lower Hutt, Wellington NZ.
One of my favorite places. Even on a hot day it's nice and cool there, under all the ferns and trees.
This is a panorama of 5 vertical images, taken a few days ago.

Clouds #2

Here, as I mentioned in my last post, the same cloud stack, using the same underlying 25 base images. But for this stack, I highlighted the brighter part of the clouds. It still shows a tyre pattern, but the sky looks entirely different.
To make this difference easier to see, I posted both versions side by side below.
The first one is the "brighter" one, the second the "darker" version which I posted earlier.
Clicking one of the images opens it in a larger view, you can easily switch between them with the arrow keys on your keyboard.

Clouds

18/11/2019

Nov 17, 2019, Island Bay, Wellington... Still waiting for either rough weather or for Summer to arrive. At the moment we are still sort of in between.
I'm still a bit immobilized due to my spine, but it's getting better, and I just had to get out, doing some photography.
There's not much going on, the weather being as it is. No exciting waves or reflections. So I decided to do some fun stuff.
The below image is a so called "cloud stack". This means, it's a stack, or combination, of several images, taken in the same location, pointing in the same direction using the same settings etc.
In this case, 25 images, taken in intervals of 6 seconds between them. So everything stays the same in the images, only the clouds moved on.
When combining those images into one, the cloud movements show in some sort of tractor-tyre pattern.
In the following image I used the darker parts of the clouds. I also created one using the brighter parts, which I will post at a later time - to show the difference.
This is something the human eye can't see, but a camera and some editing techniques can make this visible.

Mono...

Here some re-edits (I'm still not fully mobile). I do like BW in general, because it leaves much to imagination. It's real basic painting with light (which literally means "photography"), playing with ever changing shadows.
Those have been taken all around Wellington, from Percy's Reserve, over Brooklyn, Botanic Garden to Miramar.

More swells...

So, my friends, I'm pretty slowed down due to a slipped disk in my lower spine. That means, climbing around is no option at the moment, as well as any other physical work... Eradicating any income as well.
The weather wasn't that great for my type of photography lately either, so I apologize for the lack of brand new images. I try my best to get some more from my archives finalized though, like these ones from a pretty strong storm in 2016, taken in Island Bay on Wellington's South Coast.
