Milky-Way

29/8/2019

This one was my very first try of a full Milky-Way shot.
Though it appears as an arc, the Milky-Way is actually a straight line, seen from our view point in/on the galaxy. The arc shape is due to distortions created by the lenses used. As the horizon usually appears a straight line to us (though it actually isn't), adjusting such an astro image results in this particular arc shape.
This was taken in Paekakariki, in a night with a half Moon out, which makes astro photography in general difficult. It is a panorama created from 19 single shots.
Of course this one is available in printed version, please contact me if you're interested

One Large Rock

Our closest celestial body, fascinating mankind since its very beginning. Setting foot on the Moon 50 years ago didn't diminish its Magic at all. It most likely gave us more questions than it answered...

Outside <-> Inside

Saturday night, Courtenay Place, Wellington, 10:30ish PM... I've been on my way from one photo gig to another, and came across this awesome limousine. I asked the driver if it's ok to take a few photos, and was surprised he even invited me to have a look inside. Wow, looks like a whole dance club, and it's huge...
To put some preconceptions about those cars to rest, as I have been confronted with those when I first posted those images on Facebook:
These cars are used for all sorts of events, as you can read on their Facebook page The Limo Club or on their website.
They are used for weddings, sports events like with the Lions or Black Cap Bowlers, school balls, birthday parties etc.
So there is nothing dodgy about them.

Wild close-up

I hoped for some decent swells today, as there was some wind - but the South Coast was rather calm. So I worked on some close-up water shots - Enjoy
All those are also available as prints, please contact me if you're interested.

Sunrise, Mt Victoria

23/8/2019

On 15/08/19 I posted an image of the Richard Byrd Memorial on Mt Victoria in Wellington. Though it's basically some pyramid-like structure, it intrigues me due to its geometry in contrast to the natural landscape surrounding it. Also, the light effects can be pretty spectacular. The image I posted back then, was taken around sunset. The Image in this post, though, is at sunrise - I still can't decide which one I like better, maybe I need to explore additional day/night times.
This one is, of course. available as a print, please contact me if you're interested!

Difference in lighting

Those two photos have been taken at Titahi Bay, showing Mana Island.
Both at the same day, less than one hour difference. For the second one I used a fisheye lens, hence the wider angle, but also the light changed dramatically when the storm front closed in and the Sun set.
All my images are available as prints, please contact me if you're interested!

Cloud Tricks...

13/8/2019

Actually it's not a "trick" but a photographic technique, related to multiple exposure.
It's called "cloud stacking". Done on the top of Wellington Cable Car.
This particular image is composed of 64 individual shots of the same scene, with a gap of 15 seconds between shots. Those images are later combined in post processing (50 years ago this would have been done in a darkroom). Usually this is done with daylight shots, close to sunrise/set, as the colors shift and give the impression of a painting in the sky. As I am more of a night creature, I thought to try it in a moonlit windy night, getting those "tractor tracks".
Back when I first posted it, It was also shared on the Cable Car's website.
The second image shows one of those individual shots.
Prints are of course available (of both versions), feel free to contact me if you're interested!

Moody Gardens

Weather looked promising early this morning, after a rainy Sunday. I thought that fitting for a walk, in Wellington Botanic Garden, but cloud cover increased and during my walk it started to rain again. Just a bit, but enough to be uncomfortable.
Still, the absence of direct sunlight means even lighting, and allows a different way of photography with strong depth of field effects. In a nutshell, some objects are in focus, the rest is blurry.
All images are available as prints, please contact me if you're interested!

Carter Fountain

Those photos have been taken roughly one year ago, Oriental Bay, Wellington.
It was raining during most of the shooting, which accounts for the colors. Those colors were real, this is no additional filter. Some weather conditions can cause these effects, especially when it's raining or during a thunderstorm. These images were taken within about 30-45 minutes, the color changing from gold over red to deep purple.
The last of these was also chosen as a cover image for NZPhotographer magazine, issue 13, November 2018 - this one is still my favorite.
All images are available as prints, if you're interested, photos@wernerkaffl.com

Day and Night

The Wharf in Petone is one other Wellington Icon. I do like it, its symmetry, the view in general, pretty clouds, some great sunsets etc (though I didn't try sunsets there yet...).
The orange tint in the night version is no edit, it comes from the yellow streetlights behind me.

Solace in the Wind

One of those recent, crisp Winter mornings. I was just walking along the waterfront, Wellington, towards Chaffers Marina and Oriental Bay. Curiously, the majority of images of this statue are taken from the opposite side (including my own collection)...
All my photos are available as prints. Please contact me if you're interested!
